Calvin Nathaniel Pierce, Jr.April 17, 1945 ~ September 5, 2017 (age 72)
Calvin Nathaniel Pierce, Jr., 72, of Hampstead, died Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Born April 17, 1945 in Baltimore, he was the son of the late Calvin N. Pierce, Sr. and Alberta Hess Pierce. He is survived by his loving wife of 48 years, Carol A. Pierce, children Laura A. Bower and Timothy S. Pierce, grandchildren Kara, Meredith and Robert, and great grandchildren Ella and Ava.
He graduated from Loyola High School and Loyola College before serving in the United States Army from 1968-1971 at which point he was honorably discharged as a highly decorated Captain after serving in the Vietnam War and being awarded the Bronze Star Medal of Honor. Before retiring in 2008, he worked for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as the Chief of the National Relocation Program Office for 36 years.
Outside of work, Cal was an active member of St. Bartholomew Catholic Church serving as Lector for nearly 30 years. He enjoyed traveling, reading and most of all staying politically involved by watching Fox News and writing columns for the Carroll County Times. Above all, Cal’s pride and joy was in playing Santa Claus every year for not only his children, but wherever he could spread some happiness including for friends, neighbors, schools and the elderly.
A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, September 9th at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church located at 2930 Hanover Pike, Manchester MD, with Father Michael Roach as the celebrant. The family will receive family and friends at a memorial lunch at Friendly Farms Restaurant located at 17434 Foreston Road, Upperco MD from 12:30-4:30 PM.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Carroll Hospice Dove House, St. Bartholomew Catholic Church and/or the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
