Frank Jude Burke, “Hal” 88, of Westminster, died Saturday, Feb. 17, 2018, at Season’s Hospice at Sinai. Born Oct. 31, 1929 in Valhalla, NY, he was the son of the late Francis Nelson Burke and Catherine Shaughnessy Burke. Twice married, he was predeceased by Mary Jeanne “Jill” O’Mara Burke and Nancy Steele Burke.
He served in the Army during Korea and was awarded the Bronze Star. He played clarinet and saxophone in his own dance band called The Knights of Rhythm, and many gardens throughout the region bear his landscaping design skills. He graduated from Franklin High School and the University of Maryland with a degree in Entomology.
After college, he founded Scientific Plant Service, Inc. After selling Scientific Plant Service, he worked at BARC where he started horticultural and janitorial programs to train individuals with developmental disabilities. He was a member of the American Legion Post No. 116 in Reisterstown and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.
He is survived by two daughters, Mary Pauline “Molly” Burke of North Port, FL Kathleen Burke married to Timothy Stanton of Westminster and; three grandsons Burke Thomas Stanton of Chicago, IL; Cody Lee Korman of Sarasota, FL; and Samuel James Stanton of Westminster, and step-daughter Colleen married to Tony Libonate of Baltimore. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews and step-grandchildren.
He was also predeceased by a daughter Sarah “Sally” Burke Berry, a stepdaughter, Jane Curtis, and a sister, Phyllis Burke.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 23, 2018, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.
Prayer services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Private interment at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
