Linda,

From the many times that you have spoken of your father, I have learned what an hornorable soldier and veteran he was. The love that I know you and your family have for your father is GREAT! To be able to honor him and give him this dignified send off is to be commended. My thoughts and prayers are with you all, and I know that your father is in a wonderful place, at rest and at peace.

Your friend, Betsy

Words alone cannot express my sympathy on the untimely death of Uncle Bob, father, brother, grand-father, and friend. To say that his time with us was far too short is an understatement. The reality is that all who loved and knew him will sorely miss him.

I hope the outpouring of sympathy received since his parting has been of some consolation for Aunt Helga and his children and serves as a reminder to everyone of how well-loved and liked he was.

I hope that Aunt Helga and her family will find peace and comfort in knowing that his suffering is over and he is at peace.

May God bless you all in your time of sorrow.

Helga, Margie and I wish to express our deepest sympathy, Since our Berlin reunions, we have always held our best regards to you and Bob. We missed you both at our last reunion. When we last saw you both on our trip from Berlin to Paris. Bob and I talked at length about old times at the reunions and I got to know you both a lot better. You are wonderful friends. We will miss bob so much. Please take care and lets keep in touch. Bill and Margie Kegerreis.   Ps Each Reunion, when bob would send me our tour tickets, he would send me side notes about the time he spent at Fort Knox and visiting E-town, really appreciated it.

Helga : I met you and Bob for the first time in Berlin in 2010. I had corresponded with Bob for some time before we met and already considered him to be a friend. I have a picture of the three of us at McNair that I will always treasure. I regret that I could not spend more time with you & Bob. May the Good Lord hold you in the palm of His hand and may Bob be seated at His side.

Bob and Helga were always there to greet us at the BUSMVA reunions and became great friends along the way. I was highly honored to assist him on the Normandy tour last year in laying the wreath at the Henry Chapelle American cemetery in Belgium. It was a privilege and and honor to know such a great guy and a hero. God bless.

"Brothers to the End"

Together; as Brothers:
We laughed and cried.
Together as Brothers;
We fought side by side.
These two different worlds
From which we came.
But in our hearts
we were one and the same.
This place, this creed
that we live by,
I would never have dreamed
That you would ever die.
To those who remember
You were a man among men.
To me you were more.
To me you were a friend.

Some day, somewhere
We will meet again,
Because we will always be
BROTHERS TO THE END!

Rest in Peace old soldier!!!

Helga,

Please accept my sincere condolences on the loss of your husband.  Mr. Matty was a mentor, father-figure and friend when we worked together at Western Maryland College ROTC.  He loved being around people, and everyone loved your husband.  I can still see him carrying his coffee cup around, laughing and talking with the cadre and students while working.  He was a very good man, who touched the lives of many.  May you find peace and comfort in the memories of your life together.  God bless you and your family.

Bob & Helga were among the familiar faces I always looked forward to seeing at the Berlin reunions. This coming Wednesday, as his Funeral Mass is celebrated in Westminster, I'll offer Mass for him & Helga at Ft. Bragg's Womack Army Medical Center Chapel. May God reward Bob,, especially for all he did to make the Berlin U.S. Military Veterans Association what it is today!
