Zadie Smith Brehm, 91, of Westminster, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 18, 2018, at York Hospital in PA.
Born September 10, 1926 in Baltimore County, she was the daughter of Thomas Lee Smith and Antonia Barrenbrugge Smith. She became a member of St. John’s Lutheran Church when she married Charles F. Brehm on December 15, 1945. They met in elementary school and graduated from Westminster High School (Class of 1943). They were married for 72 years.
She was always hard working from her early job as a Western Maryland Railway freight clerk to years as a farm wife, to co-ownership of The Carriage House. Among the many groups in which Zadie served are the Carroll County Regional Planning Health Committee, Carroll County Hospital Committee and the Board of the Association for Retarded Citizens. She was also active in many community groups such as 4-H, Homemakers, Gladys Wimert Lioness Club, Soroptimists, and Charles Carroll Lions.
Zadie and Charles loved to travel and visited all fifty states as well as Europe, Japan, and Australia. They frequently went off in their motorhome, visiting family everywhere.
A loving mother and “Granny,” she is survived by her husband and 6 children: Yyetta and husband Douglas Whitehead, Chuck and wife Diana Brehm, Deborah Brehm, Patrick and wife Christine Brehm, William and wife Dorothy Brehm, and John D. Brehm.
Zadie also had 12 grandchildren: Charles A. Brehm and wife Sherry, Tracy Biris, Bethany Whitehead, Antonia Dailey, Jennifer Whitehead, Shelly Brehm, Keith Brehm, David Brehm and wife Marsha, Ryan Brehm, and Jason, Krystyne and Lauren Mooney. She had 12 great- grandchildren: Ashlea Brehm, Corey Brehm, Alexandra Biris, Joshua Biris, Morgan, Hunter, Reagan, and Patrick Dailey, Ariana and Addilyn Minter, Jason and Jordon Mooney. She also had a great-great grandchild: Caden Myers.
She is survived by one sister, Patricia Vertrees and preceded in death by sisters, Alice Smith, Martha Troxell, Dorothy Leonard, Dolores Berryman, and Joan Mathis. Zadie also had many treasured nieces and nephews and step-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends on Friday, February 23, 2018 from 4 to 8 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main Street, Westminster.
Funeral services will be held on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at 11 a.m. at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 827 Leisters Church Rd., Westminster. Burial will follow in the church cemetery.
