Edward Rainey Obituary

Edward D. Rainey, 86, of Westminster, passed away Thursday, February 1, 2018, at Golden Crest Assisted Living.  Born September 7, 1931 in Point Pleasant, WV; he was the son of the late Marion Waugh Rainey and Melinda Virginia Rainey.  Survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Ruby N. Rainey.

At an early age, his family moved to Gallipolis, Ohio where he grew up and graduated from Gallia County High School.  After high school he joined the Navy and served 4 years mostly aboard aircraft carriers in a crash crew. He was discharged in 1955 and moved to Harrisonburg, VA; where he lived until 1964, when he relocated to Westminster, MD to help open the Leggett Dept. Store.

He was a graduate of Harrisonburg Business School and member of Grace Lutheran Church, where he served as an usher for many years.  He retired in 1993 after 23 years of service as an account executive for the City of Baltimore. He was an antique and collectable dealer for many years and had stores in Gettysburg, Chambersburg,York and most recently in Hanover.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three daughters, Karen Whiting of Waynesboro, VA;, Cynthia Ann Hirt and husband Clyde of Westminster, MD; and Pamela Rainey and husband Larry Schultz of Livingston, TX; four grandchildren, Melinda Vollmer and husband John of Catonsville; Matthew N. Hirt and wife Claire of Westminster; Scott Yancey of Waynesboro, VA; and Katie Campbell and husband Tim of Waynesboro, VA; 2 step-grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 2 step great-grandsons.

He was predeceased by sisters Joan Ward and Linda Martin, brothers Leonard Rainey and Marion Rainey, brothers-in-law Leroy Nelson and Lamon See.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, February 8, 2018 from 4 to 7 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Grace Lutheran Church, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, MD 21157, with his Pastors, Kevin and Martha Clementson co-officiating.  Interment with military honors will follow in Zion Church Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Grace Lutheran Church Kitchen Fund, 21 Carroll St., Westminster, MD 21157.
