Henrietta was born in Baltimore on September 2, 1936; she was the second child born to Gene and Grace Compton in a family of 2 brothers, Frank and George. Henrietta was “Sis” to her brothers and parents. She has fond memories of church picincs and family trips to Wildwood New Jersey. Henrietta enoyed swimming and was an avid swimmer. She also enjoyed ice skating with her brothers across the inlet near her parent’s house. After graduating from Patterson High school she attended nursing school at City Hospital and was a nurse throughout her life. Henrietta “Henny” met her husband, Ivan “Mac”, and they married on August 27th, 1955.
They started their family in Dundalk and eventually bought a new home in Essex. There they raised 5 children: Deb, Larry, Mark, Laura, and Valerie. Henrietta “Mom” took time away from nursing and embraced the role of being a mom to the fullest extent. Mom was a great cook and would nightly prepare homemade dinners for her family of 7. At Christmas time, she was known for the hundreds of various kinds of cookies she and her friend, Joyce would bake. Henrietta also found time to sew dresses for her younger daughters and clothing for herself. She and Mac would pack up their camping gear and head to various camp sites for family vacations and sometimes with her brother Frank and his family. They would also make routine vacation trips to Mississippi and Flordia to visit family. After her family was raised Henrietta embraced crocheting and enjoyed her Bible study. She also has such wonderful memories of her vacation trips to Canada with Mac. Henrietta’s abounding kindness and love will be forever missed, and her children will remain eternally grateful to have been blessed with such a wonderful mother.
