Richard Whitmore Matthews, 59, of Hampstead, died unexpectedly on Wednesday, June 13, 2018, at his home. Born on April 5, 1959, he was the son of the late William J. and Elizabeth S. Matthews of Hampstead.
Richard graduated from North Carroll High School in 1977, and Empire Beauty Academy of Hanover, PA. He worked as a hair stylist for Colours Salon & Day Spa, and he also succeeded his father as owner of Murray’s Title and Tag Service.
Richard enjoyed spending time with his family, and his closest friends. He was a kind and generous soul who enjoyed visiting and doing small favors for the people in his life. He especially doted on following the experiences of many of his nieces and nephews. He also enjoyed spending time at Greenmount Station.
Richard was known as the Matthews family historian, and is survived by sisters Martha Fisher (Earl) of Manchester, Rebecca Kroe (Mike) of Westminster, Karen Costello (Tim) of Hague, NY., and Susie Harris (Gary) of Ellicott City. Nieces and nephews Erin Fisher (Bob), Laura Heinle (Larry), Becky Mislak (JD), Rachel Barrett (Mike), Gunter Kroe (Colleen), Jason Matthews (Stacy), Jessica Kindley (Quint), Tavish Costello, Emily Harris, and Billy Harris, and numerous great-nieces and nephews.
Richard was predeceased by his brother and best friend, John W. Matthews, as well as his nephew John Costello.
The family will receive friends Sunday June 17, 2018, from 5 to 8 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.
Funeral Services will be held Monday, June 18, 2018, at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Errol Smith officiating. Interment will be at Hampstead Cemetery.
