Russell Mills

Russell Kerr Mills, Jr., 82, of Westminster, died Friday, August 10, 2018, at the University of Maryland Medical Center.  Born July 3, 1936 in Sparks, he was the son of the late Russell Kerr Mills, Sr. and Gertrude Virginia Jordan Mills.  He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Barbara Ann Bankert Mills. 

He graduated from Westminster High School in 1954.  He retired in 1996 from CSX railroad after 42 ½ years.  He was the owner of Russell Mills Roofing and Spouting for over 50 years.  He was member of National Guard from 1954 through 1958. He was an active member of the Westminster Lions Club for 43 years, where he served as Past President, Board of Directors, and Committee Chairman for many years for medical equipment, zone chairman, and District 22 W committee chairmanships.  He was awarded the Melvin Jones Fellow award.  He was also awarded the District 22 W Honor Roll. He was also a member and Past President of Local 1224 Brotherhood of Maintenance of Way Employees. He was a lifetime member of the Church of the Ascension.

Besides his wife, he is survived by 6 children, Pamela S. Bowers and husband Dennis Sr. of Westminster; Brenda L. Stambaugh and husband Ralph of Westminster; Russell K. Mills III and wife Karen of Westminster; Donald E. Mills of Westminster; Ronald C. Mills and fiancé Natalie Brown of Burkittsville; Leonard A. Mills and wife Dawn of Union Bridge; a brother Charles Gordon Mills and wife Pat of Culpepper, VA; 14 grandchildren Dennis Bowers Jr. and wife Amy, Matthew Bowers and wife Shannon, Russell Kerr Mills IV and wife Kimberly, Kelly Mills and fiancé Brian, Sarah Stockman and husband Trevor, Ralph Stambaugh III and wife Helen, Andrew Stambaugh and wife Christina, Carie Ritz and husband Zach, Kasper Mills and wife Kirby, Collin Mills, Nicole Hayes and husband Chris, Ashley Smigovsky and husband Jonathan, Elaine Wantz and husband Brad and Nicholas Mills. He is also survived by 28 great-grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, and brother-in-law and sister-in-law G. Raymond Bankert and Dolores of Westminster.

He was predeceased by sister Mary Ann Mills Ripley and great-grandson Joel Alton Wantz.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, August 16, 2018 from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday, August 17, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.  The Westminster Lions Club will conduct a memorial service on Thursday at 8 p.m.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 18, 2018 at 10 a.m. at Church of the Ascension, 23 N. Court St., Westminster, with the Rev. Samuel Nsengiyumva and Leonard A. Mills co-officiating.  Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens in Finksburg.
