Alvie Spencer, Jr. Obituary

Alvie G. Spencer Jr., 85, of Finksburg, MD passed away peacefully at his home on August 28, 2018. Born February 19, 1933 in Carroll County, he was the son of the late Alvie G. Spencer Sr. and Myrtle Shamer Spencer.


He was a graduate of Westminster High School and Bullis Prep School. He received Bachelor Degrees from Gettysburg College and Johns Hopkins University, and his MBA from Loyola College.


During his long and distinguished career in the Banking and Investment industry, he was a Senior Executive for three major Wall Street Firms with a concentration on Investment Management for financial institutions. After retiring from Merrill Lynch in 1996, he was affiliated with two independent investment counseling firms in the Baltimore area.
Alvie was Chairman of the Republican Central Committee for Carroll County from 1962-70. During his tenure, he was a delegate for two Republican conventions and worked with Charles “Mac” Mathias on his victorious U.S. Senate campaigns. He was appointed and acted as a Special Assistant to the Secretary of Commerce from 1970-75, and was a member of the 1972 Nixon Re-election advance team. He was appointed by Vice-President Spiro Agnew to the Maryland Council for Higher Education from 1968-1972.
Alvie was a past Director of the Carroll County Historical Society and Carroll County Bank, and was a past President of the Carroll County Old-Timers Baseball Association. He was a member of the Center Club of Baltimore, The Baltimore Bond Club, and Sigma Chi National Fraternity. He was a life member of Patapsco United Methodist Church, Westminster Elks, and the VFW.


He was an accomplished baseball player who played locally in the South Penn League, York County League, and Baltimore Major League. He continued to play in college and the military. Alvie served in the Navy from 1953-55, and was assigned during baseball season to Norfolk Naval Base to play for the Atlantic Fleet. He played with and against many major league players during this time. After his playing career, he served as a Scout for the St. Louis Cardinals.


Alvie was an avid tennis player and distance runner-continuing these endeavors into his eighties. He also worked out daily at East End Athletic Club and Four Seasons Sports Complex. He was a charter member of Carroll Racquet Club, and he played tennis numerous times weekly into his early eighties. He also enjoyed his time white-water rafting in areas such as Colorado, Alaska, and Ecuador.


Alvie and his wife travelled extensively all over the world and enjoyed experiencing places such as Antarctica, the Amazon Basin, the Galapagos Islands, Greenland, the Middle East, Central America, South America, Terra del Fuego, and South Africa.


He was a prolific reader with a special interest in historical biographies and the financial markets. He was the co-financial partner in the production of the 2008 Sports History of Carroll County book.


Along with his parents, he was pre-deceased by his first wife Phyllis Beaver Spencer in 1990 and his sister Mildred Spencer in 1996.


Alvie is survived by his wife Dr. Barbara White of Finksburg; children and spouses Craig and Christina Spencer of Hanover, PA; Terry and Kim Spencer of Westminster; and Jenni and Rodney DeKett of Westminster, granddaughter Brooke DeKett of Westminster, sister-in-law Gaynell Loder of Wilmington, DE; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was also blessed with many dear friends whom he continued to meet with and call until his death.


The family will receive friends on Friday, August 31, 2018 from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m.  at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.


A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, September 1, 2018 at 11 a.m. at Patapsco United Methodist Church, 2930 Patapsco Rd., Finksburg, with Pastor Barbara Allen officiating.
