Audrey E Whalen Obituary
Audrey E. Whalen, 89, of Westminster, died Tuesday, December 26, 2023, at BridgingLife Dove House from complications of vascular dementia. Born August 1, 1934, she was the daughter of the late Walter and Maude (Mayne) Wright. She was the last of her immediate family. Twice married, her first husband Sterling D. Evans Jr. predeceased her in March 1980. In January 1982, she married Clarence L. Whalen and he passed in September, 2008.
Audrey was a graduate of Mt. Airy High School, Class of 1952. She was a member of Suburban Homemakers, Carroll Garden Club and the Red Hat Society. She was a homemaker for most of her life and was known for her decorations for the holidays, gardening skills and her baking abilities. She was also known as “the cookie lady” by many children in her neighborhood.
Thanksgiving and Christmas were her favorite holidays and Roy and she entertained family and friends for many years. The grandchildren and great-grandchildren always enjoyed decorating the many gingerbread houses that they made for them. In 2022, she sold her house and moved into the independent living at Brightview. She made many new friends during her time there and enjoyed “happy hour” with the girls every evening before dinner. The family would like to thank the friends and family that helped her move to Brightview, as it was a very traumatic time for her. Also, thanks to the Bayada staff that provided PT, OT and memory assistance to help her adjust to the new environment.
To all of the people that work and live at Brightview, you will be remembered for the many acts of kindness and friendship. It truly was a blessing getting to know everyone. To Right At Home Care, thank you for coming to our rescue when we needed 24 hour care for our mom. A special thank you to The Dove House staff. You are all angels that God sent to us at just the right moment. It wasn’t an easy journey, but we appreciate everything you all did to insure the most loving and peaceful homecoming for our mother and grandmother.
Mom had many wonderful friends throughout her long life, but a special thank you to Wilma Welling, her partner in all club activities, and Anna Lee Close, her lifelong friend. Your friendship was most kind and thoughtful.
She is survived by her son, Jerry Evans and his wife Sherry, her son Brent Whalen and her daughter Stacey W. Kyker, all of Westminster. Also surviving her are grandchildren and spouses, Christopher Evans and his wife Bre of Pennsylvania, Amy E. Middleton and her husband David of Florida, Kyle Kyker and his wife Erin of North Carolina, Brooks Kyker of Westminster, and Bailey Whalen of Towson, great-grandchildren, Elsa and Cameryn Evans of Pennsylvania, Avery M. White and her husband Danny of Florida, Cade, Cohen and Audriana Plum Middleton of Florida and Finley Kyker of North Carolina.
A son Todd Evans predeceased her in March, 2015.
The family will receive friends on Monday, January 1, 2024 from 2 to 5 P.M. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home. Friends may also call one hour prior to services. Private interment at Providence Cemetery.
