Charles Thomas Sparenberg Obituary
Charles Thomas “Tom” Sparenberg, 79, of Hagerstown, passed away on Friday, April 25, 2025 at the BridgingLife Dove House. Born May 11, 1945 in Baltimore, he was the son of Violet Blanche Sparenberg.
Tom joined the Army at seventeen. He served as a corporal with the 2D Howitzer Battalion, 31st Artillery, participating in Operation ‘Big Lift’ in West Germany. He carried his love of driving large equipment into civilian life, spending most of his career behind the wheel of a big rig. Notably, he worked for Avis, GPX, Pat Salmon & Sons (a U.S. Postal Service contractor), and Food Lion.
Good seasons and bad, he was an ever-optimistic Baltimore Oriolies fan who loved the franchise from the Shorebirds to the Tides. Tom also enjoyed coaching his son’s little league team for several seasons and sharing his love of history with both his children. He particularly loved WWII movies and trips to local Civil sites. When he wasn’t watching his favorite television shows, he was on the hunt for a pinochle game.
He is survived by his son, Charles Thomas Sparenberg, II, his wife, Jennifer, and their daughters, Laura and Sarah; his daughter, Rebecca Alicia Sparenberg; and former spouse and friend, Darlene Sparenberg. As well as his siblings: Barbara Duff, Rogette Shifflett, Jack League, and Zana Bayle.
Services will be held at the Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery on Monday, May 19, 2025, at 1:00 PM. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to a veterans charity of your choice.
