In loving memory of Darlene (Porter) Gerwitz, 84, previously of Mineral, VA and Damascus, MD, who passed away peacefully on Friday, November 13, 2020 at the Carroll Hospice Dove House in Westminster, MD. She was the loving wife of Gerald “Jerry” Gerwitz for 42 years, and a loving mother to her children Sherene (Rasooli) Mathis, Roger Rasooli and Colleen Rasooli.
She was a lifetime employee of the federal government working as a Budget Analyst for NIH and the Food & Drug Administration. After retirement, she became an IRS Certified Tax Accountant which enabled her to do tax returns for the less fortunate. Her kindness and generosity will never be forgotten.
Prior to her illness, Darlene was anactive member of the St. Jude’s Women’s Guild and the Belmont Club of Women (BCOW) in Mineral, VA. In addition, she participated in many events of the Knights of Columbus of which her husband was an active member.
Darlene was an avid gardener and homemaker. She enjoyed gardening, crafts, and baking for numerous church functions, and was particularly known for her lemon meringue pies. Darlene fondly remembered the time she spent with her Canasta group, and her many close friends. Darlene and her husband were fortunate enough to have travelled around the world seeing the wonders of many countries. But most of all,she loved her family and she will be greatly missed.
Surviving in addition to her husband are sister Karen Porter; daughter Sherene Mathis and husband Michael; stepdaughters Ann Gerwitz, Kay Wright, Amy Krause and husband Raymond Patrick “Pat”, and Jill Gerwitz; step grandchildren and great grandchildren Jordan Mathis and wife Megan; Dianna Russell and husband Charles “Chuck”; Avery Mathis, Autumn Russell, Victoria Russell and Logan Russell; and numerous nieces and nephews which were all close to her heart.
She was predeceased by parents Laurene (Porter) Sloan and Kay Porter; siblings Wm. Daniel “Danny” Porter, Eugene Porter, Joan Drogowski; sonRoger Rasooli; daughter Colleen Rasooli; nephew Michael Drogowski; and former husbands Gene A. Piper and Roger T.Rasooli.
A joint funeral service for Darlene (Porter) Gerwitz and husband, Gerald Gerwitz who passed away April 3, 2021, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 31, 2021, at the Saint Jude Catholic Church, 1937 Davis Highway, Mineral, VA 23117. Due to COVID restrictions at the time of death, the funerals were postponed.
