David Thomas Evans Obituary
David Thomas Evans, a resident of Taneytown, Maryland, and formerly a long-time resident of Reisterstown, passed away peacefully after a courageous nine-year battle with Lewy body dementia. Born in Philadelphia on December 16, 1935, David was the son of the late Ellwood Evans, a boxer from Philadelphia and proprietor of car dealerships in both Philadelphia and Miami, and Margaret Ann (Gallagher) Evans, a devoted homemaker who created a loving and supportive home for her family in Philadelphia. He was the beloved elder brother of the late Anthony Evans and the late Virginia (Evans) Currie.
In 1946, the Evans family relocated to Tampa, Florida, where David completed his early education at St. Leo Prep (Class of 1954), where he was a member of the varsity track team. Prior to his senior year, he contracted polio and was temporarily placed on an iron lung, and doctors believed he would never walk again. This medical history prevented David from serving in the armed forces, unlike his brother and his brother-in-law, the late William Joseph Cardew, both of whom proudly served in the Navy. Defying the odds, David regained his ability to walk and went on to graduate from Florida State University in 1961 with a degree in public administration, followed by a Master of Law (LL.M.) degree from the University of Miami. His dedication to public service was evident in his impressive 53-year career as a systems analyst, from 1963 until his retirement in 2016 for the United States Government.
Beyond his professional endeavors, David was engaged in his community. From 1973 to 1997, he made a lasting impact by founding and coaching the Reisterstown Rangers travel team soccer club, mentoring countless young athletes. In his retirement, David discovered a passion for bicycling, finding camaraderie and joy in daily rides with friends, especially his friend Ken Miller, and embarking on memorable trips throughout the United States and Canada.
A devoted husband, David shared 44 years of marriage with his beloved wife, Elaine Ann Evans (née Cardew), who predeceased him in 2007. He is lovingly remembered by his children: David Cardew Evans of Taneytown, MD; Thomas Christopher Evans and his wife Sue of Riverview, Florida; and Jane Ann Wynn and her husband Thomas of Parkville, MD. and his step daughter, Kimberly Lytle of Kissimmee, Florida. His legacy continues through his grandchildren: Stephen Lytle, Kimber Lytle, Verity, Rowan, Gwenyth, and Lilyth, and his nieces and nephews: Brian Cardew, Tim Cardew, Nancy (Cardew) Garripoli, Terri Cardew, Chris Cardew, Linda Lou, and Tina Perella.
