Donald “Zack” Richard Zechman, 88, of Westminster, MD peacefully left our world on Saturday, March 1, 2025. Born January 19, 1937 in Lebanon, PA, he was the son of the late Roland and Elma May (Kreiser) Zechman. Zack is survived by his wife, Ruth Ann (Yorty). They would have celebrated 70 years of marriage in May.

He was a long time Mason in Frederick, MD. He worked for Ft. Detrick for more than 25 years. He was the hometown legend, avid racecar driver, and a role model to the racing community. He was always willing to lend a helping hand to his competitors even after on track disagreements “rubbing is racing.” He enjoyed racing with his sons and grandson at local tracks in Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virgina for over 50 years. He was inducted into the Auto Racing Club of Hagerstown (ARCH) Hall of Fame in 2024. He was also inducted into the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) in Mechanicsburg. He was a member of the ARCH and Checkered Flag Racing Clubs. Saturday nights and some Sundays you could find him at the track. When he wasn’t at the track you could be assured there was a NASCAR or local race on the television.

On and off the track he was an outstanding person. He was the biggest supporter of his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. From graduation celebrations to owning businesses to all of the sports (basketball, football, gymnastics, baseball) he wanted to know all the details of everyone's celebrations as they did what they loved.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by son Randy Zechman, and Janet, daughter Cindy Hatfield, and Dave, daughter, Cathy Zechman and Tom, and son Mick Zechman, and Blythe. He also had 11 grandchildren, 22 great grandchildren, 4 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by 3 grandsons; Steven, Paul, and Dillon, 5 sisters, and 4 brothers.

The family will receive friends on Friday, March 7, 2025 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. and Saturday, March 8, 2025 from 10 to 11 a.m. at Fletcher Funeral and Cremation Services, 254 East Main St., Westminster, Maryland 21157. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, with Pastor Cody Danner officiating.. A graveside service will follow at St. Mary's Cemetery, 1441 East Mayberry Rd., Westminster, MD 21158.
