Emmet John Nelson Obituary

Emmet John Nelson, 62, of Westminster, MD passed away surrounded by family on Fri. March 6, 2026 at Sinai Hospital following a brief illness.

The youngest of 9 children, Emmet was born October 22, 1963 in Baltimore, MD, the son of the late Arthur (“Carp”) and Frances (“Babe”) Nelson.   He was the beloved husband of Gwen Rhoten Welty, with whom he shared almost 15 wonderful years.

A 1981 graduate of Lansdowne High School and a graduate of Lincoln Tech, Emmet worked in the auto industry as a mechanic auto service sales specialist.  He proudly worked the last 21 years with Bay Area Point S Tire and Auto Service in Westminster and Eldersburg, MD, most recently as General Manager of the Eldersburg location.  He also worked part-time for many years at Carroll County Times in the early morning hours, as a Dock Manager.

Emmet was a highly spiritual man, humble, exceedingly kind and charitable. He felt great joy when being able to help someone in any way he could and often quietly paid the tab for other diners at local restaurants.  His greatest love was fishing, particularly at the Outer Banks of N.C., in search of tuna and marlin.  He enjoyed reading, music, history and NASCAR. He particularly enjoyed spending time in Gettysburg and Lancaster, PA with Gwen.  In the 1980’s he was a frequent visitor at Hammerjacks  in Baltimore and more recently, he was thrilled to be able to follow his son’s musical career with Ignite the Fire and other groups.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his brothers Art, Michael and Steven Nelson.

Emmet is lovingly survived by his wife, Gwen; his children Michael, Abagayle and Emehlia Nelson ; brother Kenneth Nelson ( Joyce) and sisters Kathleen Verheul, Frances Willner, Eva Dittrich (James) and Kimberly Willner (Glenn);  step-daughters Heather Hudson and Christina Stover;  loving nieces, nephews and great-nieces and nephews. He is also survived by step-grandchildren and his beloved cats.

Emmet generously donated his corneas to Infinite Legacy and his body to the Maryland Anatomy Board in hope of being able to help others.

There will be no funeral service but a Celebration of Life will be held at a later date.

If you wish to make a donation in his name, he would be honored. His favorite charities were Humane Society of Carroll County humanesocietycarrollcounty.org, Dove House/Bridging Life Hospice https://www.lifebridgehealth.org/giving/bridginglife and St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital https://www.stjude.org/donate

They say “only the good die young” …. Emmet left us much too soon and while we will miss him terribly, we will always remember his kindness and compassion for all, as we hope you will too….”For I must be traveling on, now, ‘cause there’s too many places I’ve got to see. Fly, free bird”  and have fun fishing with the family.
