Gene L. Brothers, 83, passed away Sunday, May 19, 2024, at Carroll Hospital Center. He was the husband of Caroline J. [Bien] Brothers, to whom he was married for 43 years. Born April 23, 1941 in Gamber, he was the son of the late Frank T. Brothers and Blanche V. (Ward) Brothers.

Gene was a 1959 graduate of Westminster High School, where he was a 4 year member of their football team. After graduating he joined the Air Force, serving most of his next 6 years in Edinburgh, Scotland.

In addition to his wife Carol, Gene is survived by his daughter Angela Brothers Bonarrigo and spouse Joe, son Matthew Bien and spouse Kim, son Lucas Bien and spouse Gayle, and son Kurt Bien.

He was predeceased by his daughter Carole Brothers Wenck, brother Joseph Barnes, sister Lorraine Barnes Wicks, and sister Patricia Brothers Humbert. He was the proud, loving grandfather of 7 and great-grandfather of 4, plus Uncle Gene to nieces and nephews.

After the Air Force, Gene accumulated 3 years of college while working for various insurance companies and agencies until starting his own agency, Brothers Insurance Associates Inc. in 1982, where he remained until his retirement in 2021. He was a choir member at St. Mary’s United Church of Christ, a lifetime member and Trustee of Westminster Elks #2277, member of the Carroll County Choral Society, past President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Carroll County, and past President of the Independent Insurance Agents of Maryland. Gene coached Westminster Jaycees Girls Softball for many years as well as coached/played in the Carroll County Mens Softball League. Gene enjoyed spy novels, Ravens football, golf, raising roses, going to Ocean City, swimming, and dancing.

The family will receive friends on Saturday, May 25, 2024 from 2 – 4 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 254 East Main Street, Westminster, with a service beginning at 3 p.m. with Pastor Sam Chamelin officiating.

Private inurnment will be at a later date at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery.
