George Albert Nelson, 92, of Westminster, died peacefully on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at Brightview Senior Living, Westminster, MD. Born March 5, 1931, in Gully, Minnesota, he was the son of the late Clarence R. Nelson and Ellen S. Nelson. He was the beloved husband of the late Shirley L. (Knight) Nelson, his wife of 57 years.
Before retiring he worked for C & P Telephone Co. for 38 years. He was a member of St. John (Leister’s) Evangelical Lutheran Church, the Moose Chapter #897, and the Antique Phone Collectors Assoc. George was a 1948 graduate of Elmer Wolfe High School. He served 3 years in the United States Navy. Before his wife’s passing, they enjoyed dancing, bird watching, gardening, golfing, traveling, and their visits to Charlestown. They loved their cocker spaniels, Peachie, and Taffy. He was known for being a well-dressed man and always had on one of his fancy wrist watches. He was a great storyteller along with his humorous sense of humor.
He is survived by brothers, sisters, and in-laws, Betty J. Nelson of New Windsor, Orval S. Sr. and Shirley of Valdosta, Georgia, Yasuko Nelson, of Sugarland, TX., Elmer C. Nelson of Littlestown, PA, Carol E. (Nelson) Blubaugh of Westminster, Linda Bowers Nelson of Union Bridge, Wanda S. (Nelson) Waugh of Lineboro, also are surviving twelve (12) nieces and eight (8) nephews. In addition, to his wife’s family, he is survived by Carolyn E. Knight, Kenneth W. Knight, and four (4) nieces and three (3) nephews.
He was predeceased in death by brothers and in-laws: Marvin C. Nelson, Donald E. and R. Marie Nelson, Josie L. Nelson, Doris L. Nelson, Clayton R. Nelson, Irvin L. and Betty Sue Nelson, Richard N. Nelson, Sr., Harold W. Nelson, Marden L. Blubaugh, and John C. Waugh. Nieces, Brenda E. Nelson and Wanda Faye Nelson, and nephew, Charles R. Nelson. Also Predeceased by in-laws Edith A. Knight, Doris I. Dixon, Cleveland (T.B.) Knight, and Roger D. Knight.
The family will receive friends on Thursday, May 11, 2023, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, P.A., 254 E. Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157.
Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 12, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Matt Schenning officiating. Interment will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens, 2800 Old Westminster Pike, Finksburg, MD 21048.
Following the graveside service there will be a luncheon at St. John (Leister’s Church) Evangelical Lutheran Church, 877 Leister’s Church Road, Westminster, MD 21157
