Mrs. Grace Ellen Wiley Lane sadly passed away from natural causes on January 7, 2025 while living with her daughter in Irmo, South Carolina. She was born on October 4, 1935 to Russell and Elizabeth Wiley of Baltimore. She became the beloved wife of Reverend Albert K. Lane, Jr. of Baltimore on June 11, 1955. She was by his side until his death on May 22, 2013.
She graduated from Eastern High School in 1954. After her marriage to Albert K. Lane, Jr., they moved to Fort Worth, Texas where Al served in the United States Army Corps of Engineers. Later they moved to Pittsburgh where Grace stayed home with her children while Al worked as a Civil Engineer for the Pittsburgh Des Moines Steel Company. In 1965, Grace’s husband joined the Baltimore-Washington Conference of the United Methodist Church. In each of the churches, Grace became active with the Women’s Groups, Choirs (singing in adult choirs and directing youth choirs) and all other programs where she could support her husband’s role as pastor. Together, they served at the Jollytown (PA) Charge, Libertytown UMC, Wesley-Freedom UMC, Lexington Park UMC, Forestville UMC, West Baltimore UMC and Pleasant Hill UMC. After Rev. Lane retired, Grace continued working with the United Methodist Women and singing in the choirs, along with supporting her husband’s work as a retired minister at Bethel, Stone Chapel, Wesley Chapel (Hampstead), Calvary (Gamber) and Westminster United Methodist Church where she remained a member even after his death.
In addition, Grace taught piano lessons while living in Eldersburg and substituted in a couple of the elementary schools in St. Mary’s County. Plus, she served as secretary in a couple of the churches where her husband was the pastor. She loved camping and traveling with her husband, family and friends. Throughout the years, Grace has enjoyed needlepoint, crocheting, cross stitch and sewing. She has also loved playing dominoes with her domino group, shopping with her daughters, completing word hunt puzzles and spending time with her children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and all of the family pets.
Her life will be forever remembered by her four children and their spouses. Rev. Albert K. Lane, III and his wife Dayna of Calvert County, Md., Martha Milli and her husband Michel of Carroll County, Md., Jean Litfin and her husband Matt of Carroll County, Md. and Helen Semkiw and her husband Roman of Irmo, SC. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren; Michael and his wife Annie, Chris, Amy and her husband Jordan, Steve and his wife Jennie, Mark, Daniel and his wife Annalisa, Brian and his wife Brittany. Jeff, William and his wife Lauren, Melissa and Elizabeth. She also has 5 great grandchildren; Jackson, Parker, Gladys, Beckett and Charlotte, as well as several second and third cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Friday, January 24th at 10:30 am at the Westminster United Methodist Church, 165E. Main Street, Westminster with Rev. Dr. Malcolm Stranathan officiating. An Interment will follow at the Wesley United Methodist Church Cemetery in Hampstead. The family will receive friends at the church from 10:00 am until the start of the service.
