Helen C. Schmitt, of Westminster, MD, passed away on July 28, 2026, at the age of 84. She was born June 2, 1942, in New Britain, CT, the daughter of the late Phillip and Frances (Kopera) Ciepiel.
A 1960 graduate of Nathan Hale-Ray High School in Moodus, CT, and a 1962 graduate of Becker College in Massachusetts, she worked for 32 years for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, most recently as a budget analyst. A tireless worker, she cultivated lifelong friendships in any organization she was involved in. From federal employee to member of the Synchrobelles synchronized swimming team, her smile and warmth touched everyone she met. An avid traveler and adventurer, she was always eager to see what lay around the next bend. There was always an extra plate set for whoever would stop by to get their fill of her good cooking.
She is survived by her four children: Kevin Schmitt (step) and his wife Carolyn, Valerie Payton (step) and her husband Kim, Joseph Schmitt and his wife Bridgette Nation, and Monica Schmitt and her husband Kyle Rutledge. She is also survived by her brother John Ciepiel, her niece Maria, and a number of cousins.
She loved and never missed an opportunity to feed her grandchildren—Kurt, Sheena, Erica, Jesse, Tristan, Emilie, Andre, Annalisa, Morgan, Paige, Sophie, and Cameron—along with two great-grandchildren, Evan and Ryan.
A church service will be held at St. Bridget’s, 75 Moodus Leesville Rd, Moodus, CT, at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 14, 2026. Cemetery service to follow on North Moodus Rd.
