James Howell Billingslea, Sr., of Westminster, MD., passed away peacefully on February 1, 2021 after a long and full life at the age of 96. James was born at home on September 9, 1924 in Westminster, MD to the late Leeds K. and Emily (Zepp) Billingslea.
He was baptized and confirmed at The Church of the Ascension in Westminster, and remained an active member of the church throughout his life. James served in the US Navy during World War II and was always proud to have served his country. After returning to Westminster following his tour of duty in the military, he joined his father at the Leeds K Billingslea Insurance Agency. The agency was expanded later to include Real Estate sales. James retired from the agency in 1995. The company is still operating today and is known as Billingslea Insurance and Real Estate.
He was an active member within the Westminster community for many years, serving multiple organizations in a variety of roles, including the American Legion, the Carroll County Board of Realtors, the Civitan Club, and the Westminster Riding Club. He loved to spend time on his boat, The Lady Caroline, cruising the Chesapeake Bay, and snow skiing as a member of the Merrylanders Ski Club. He was a longtime member of the Westminster Forest and Stream Club. He also was an avid gardener and would spend hours in his flower gardens.
He is survived by his children: a daughter Deborah Linard and husband Gregory, a son, James H. Billingslea, Jr. and wife Tamara, grandchildren: Kristin Young and husband Daniel, Melissa Linard, James H. Billingslea, III and wife Dana, Jenna Billingslea, great-Grandchildren: Abigail Young, Lauren Young, Chloe Keyser and James H. Billingslea IV as well as numerous nieces and nephews. He will be remembered by his family as a loving and caring husband and father. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Caroline M. Billingslea and his sister, Emily R. Wirth.
A private graveside service will be held at Westminster Cemetery, with family only in attendance.
