James (Jim) H. Thompson, 71, of Westminster, MD, previously of Beltsville, MD, died Sunday, January 31, 2021 peacefully at home after a long illness. Born May 24, 1949 in Cheverly, MD, he was the son of the late Evelyn M. (Paul) Thompson and George W. Thompson. Gentle soul, loving husband and father, he was married to Barbara G. (Roberson) Thompson, his wife of 52 years; they raised 2 children.
Jim loved all things automotive, mechanical, and working with his hands. He worked as an auto mechanic after high school, followed by many years in the construction field. He loved being around the water, fishing, and crabbing. He loved animals of all kinds. Jim enjoyed sharing his time and skills to help others. Jim was a previous member of Beltsville Volunteer Fire Department Company 31 in Beltsville, MD. He was a previous member of Northwest Baptist Church in Reisterstown, MD.
In addition to his wife, Barbara, Jim is survived by son, Matthew and daughter-in-law Stephanie (Gonzalez), grandsons Daniel and Dylan Leyendecker; daughter Meagan and son-in-law Matthew Etner, grandson Thomas Etner and wife Starsha and great granddaughter Theodora, grandson Christian Etner and wife Ester, and grandson Camden Etner; and many loving extended family members and friends.
In light of the current pandemic, no funeral service will be held at this time. Instead, a celebration of life will be held at a later date with details forthcoming from the family. Contributions in Jim's memory may be made to The Michael J. Fox Foundation (www.michaeljfox.org).
