Jean Burbage Obituary

Jean S. Burbage, 100, of Carthage, NC, formerly of Baltimore, MD, passed away on February 15, 2024, due to complications from a stroke.

She is survived by a son, Ross, an educator with Carroll County Public Schools and an independent contractor officiating soccer and lacrosse, and daughter-in-law Edith, a retired schoolteacher, of Westminster, MD; and a son, Lee, a Lowes Home Improvement associate, of Charleston, SC.

She was born on July 14, 1923, to the late Carroll and Eleanor Sanner.  She was predeceased by an older sister, Ruth Moore. She graduated from Forest Park High School in Baltimore.  Her date for the school’s Spring Dance was her friend from City College, William Donald Schaffer (who went on to become the Governor of Maryland).

She worked as a bank teller at Western National Bank located near Eutaw and Fayette Streets in Baltimore City and it was there that she met her husband of 50 years, the late Landon W. Burbage, Jr., Vice-President of Eutaw Savings Bank.  The bank buildings are now part of the Hippodrome Theater entertainment complex. He passed away in 2002.

She was a stay-at-home mom while raising her two sons but she returned to work as a secretary, to help pay for their college educations, finding employment in the office of the Baltimore Orioles at the old Memorial Stadium and at the Grace United Methodist Church in its office of Pastoral Counseling.

In 1989, she and her husband moved from the Gaywood Community of Baltimore County and retired to Pinehurst Trace in Moore County, NC.  There she became involved as a volunteer with the League Of Women Voters.  She and her husband were involved in the initial fund raising and construction for the Pinehurst United Methodist Church, which she was a member of for almost 35 years.

She was a lifelong aficionado of the opera and she enjoyed crossword puzzles and bingo in her spare time.  She lived for the last five years at Tara Plantation Of Carthage.

Graveside services will be held on Monday, March 11, 2024 at 11 a.m. at Druid Ridge Cemetery, 7900 Park Heights Ave., Baltimore, MD 21208.

In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be sent to the Pinehurst United Methodist Church.  Interment and a graveside service will be at the Druid Ridge Cemetery, Baltimore, MD.
