Jo Ann "Joby" Coates Brooks, 76, of Taneytown, formerly of New Windsor, went to be with the Lord on Monday, February 15, 2021 at Select Specialty Hospital in York, PA after a courageous battle with COVID-19. Born December 27, 1944 in Frederick, MD, she was the daughter of the late Ida Thompson Coates and Charles Coates.
Ms. Joann worked as a Nurse and later became a Drug and Alcohol addictions specialist at Springfield Hospital Center in Sykesville, MD for over 20 years before retiring in 1991 due to an automobile accident. She was a lifelong member of Strawbridge United Methodist Church. She was also a member of Sisters of Faith and United Methodist Women. In her younger years she served on the Board of Elections, The NAACP and many other committees. Joann enjoyed spending time with family, having a cup of coffee while watching soap operas, shopping, taking drives in the country, watching her grandchildren play sports and talking to her many friends. She will be dearly missed by all.
Joann is survived by her 3 children, Herbert L. Brooks Jr and his wife Lisa of Owings Mills, MD, Tisha Brooks Hebron and husband William Jr. of New Windsor, MD, Joseph Brooks and his wife Kenyatta of Taneytown, MD and step-daughter Anita Lewis and husband John of Union Bridge, MD, six grandchildren, Miranda, Joseph II, Jordan, Drake, Ava, Sarah; former husband Herbert L. Brooks Sr., sister-in-law Carolyn Coates, numerous nieces, nephews and friends Arlene Clark, Judy Hill, Dorothy (Muddy) Brown, Theresa Hebron, Joyce Jackson and Ebony Cameron.
She was predeceased by 9 siblings, Doris Threatt, Raymond Coates, Phyllis Reams, Kenneth Coates, Leonard Coates, Katherine Hollingsworth, Charles Coates, Ida Coates Key and Lucille Key; close friends William Dixon, Betty Thomas and Lucille Black.
The family will receive friends on Monday, February 22, 2021 from 6 – 9 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral Home and Cremation Services, 254 E. Main Street, Westminster, MD.
Funeral Services will be held on Tuesday, February 23, 2021 at 11 a.m. at the funeral home with Pastor Ambassador Blango Ross officiating. Interment will be at Wesley Cemetery in Libertytown, MD following the services at the funeral home.
