Joyce Ruth Mills

Joyce Ruth Mills, 81, of Westminster, died Friday, October 6, 2023, at Northwest Hospice.  Born November 24, 1941 in New York, she was the daughter of the late Ruth E. (Besley) L’Amoreaux and Raymond C. L’Amoreaux.  She was the beloved wife of Barry Conover Mills. 

 Joyce was a graduate of West Virginia Wesleyan College where she majored in Music and Elementary Education.  She was affiliated with Alfa Xi Delta social sorority.  She worked as an elementary school teacher where she taught General Studies and English.  While living in the Seattle area Joyce taught English as a second language to Asian refugees and she sponsored several refugee families.

Joyce became a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, where she taught primary age children in several congregations for over 40 years. Joyce served as a Temple worker in the Washington DC Temple and was also a singer and soprano soloist in the Mormon Choir of Washington.

Besides her husband, she is survived by children Kathleen Mills and Freda Achea-Swensen, brothers Robert L’Amoreaux and Raymond L’Amoreaux, Jr., a sister Gloria Davis, grandchildren Heather Schiller, Tyler deSimon, Dylan deSimon, Jordan Spriggs, Samara Spriggs, D.J. Pendergraph, Justin Mills, Jaida  and Gerome Young, Anaka Rappleye, Lincoln Swensen, and great grandchildren Kaeley Fowler, Harper Schiller, Giselle Young, Zy’leah Sublet, Jaylonte Sublet, Jr., Elliana and Demetria deSimon

She was predeceased by a daughter Jennifer Mills and granddaughter Brittany deSimon.

A Memorial Service will be held on Tuesday, October 10, at 10:00 am at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 595 Johahn Dr., Westminster, MD.
