Mary Frances "Fran" Sturgill Obituary

Mary Frances “Fran” Sturgill of Westminster, peacefully passed away surrounded by her loving family while in the care of Brightview Westminster Ridge, on Sunday, January 7, 2024. She was 80 years old.

She was born in Washington, DC, on December 9, 1943, to the late William Franklin “Frank” Wells (1913-1999) and Kathleen Agnes (Stanton) Wells (1916-1979). In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her beloved sisters Kathleen Agnes “Snookie” (Wells) Price in 1984, Maureen Theresa (Wells) Sweetland in 1988, and Margaret Eleanor “Bootsy” (Wells O’Brien) Elam in 2003.

Fran was a real estate agent in Carroll County for many years. A dedicated member of St. John Roman Catholic Church in Westminster, she was deeply devoted to her faith from the time of her first Holy Communion at Saint Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Washington, DC, on May 27, 1951.

In February of 2024 Franny would have celebrated her 62nd Wedding Anniversary with her husband James Geoffrey “Jim” Sturgill, Sr. In 2012 family members and friends from far and near gathered in Westminster to celebrate Jim and Fran’s Golden Wedding Anniversary.

Fran enjoyed adventures and new experiences, from day trips with friends to Lancaster County, PA, to three decades of playing bridge with friends, spending time in Kent Narrows, MD and Pinehurst, NC. She loved watching her grandchildren play sports, especially soccer, reading, listening to music, completing puzzles, walking with friends and taking care of her dogs.

Fran loved traveling. She visited many places in the states including a Maine to Miami trek. She also went on trips abroad to Ireland, England, Italy and Jerusalem. Fran rarely missed an opportunity to journey “down home,” as she called it, to Eolia, KY, and Flat Gap, Pound and Wise County, VA, for annual family reunions.

In addition to her husband Jim, she is survived by her four sons: Gerald “Lee” Sturgill, and his wife Tracie, of Westminster, MD; Joseph “Scott” Sturgill, and his wife Erika, of Sudlersville, MD; James Geoffrey “Geoff” Sturgill, Jr., and Stacie Hagerman of Hanover, PA; and David Gregory “Greg” Sturgill of Baltimore, MD. Blessed with a large and loving family she leaves one sister Caroline Elizabeth “Carol” (Wells) O’Brien of Annapolis, MD; and numerous nieces and nephews. Her memory will also be deeply cherished by her eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren: Tyler and Rachel Sturgill and sons Miles and Cole of Westminster; Cory Sturgill and daughter Mila of North East, MD; Jake and Hannah Sturgill and sons Colton and Benjamin of Westminster; Rebecca and Matt Ruby and their daughter Regan, of Westminster; James (III) and Lisa Sturgill and their daughter Kennedy James “KJ” of Westlake, Ohio; Meghan Sturgill of Westminster; Morgan Sturgill of Ellicott City, MD; and Zachary “Zack” Sturgill of Ellicott City.

The family will receive friends on Friday, January 12, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with a service at 1:00 p.m. at Fletcher Funeral and Cremation Services, 254 E. Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157.  Interment will be private.
