Michael Meyers Obituary

Michael C. Meyers, born April 17, 1927 to Catherine Douglas and George Augustus Meyers in Lonaconing, Maryland, a retired dentist, who practiced general dentistry in Westminster for forty five years until retiring in 2002.  He died on July 17, 2022 at the age of 95.

After graduating from dental school, Dr. Meyers was the staff dentist at Mt. Wilson State Hospital for three years before opening an office in the Times Building in Westminster in 1959 to practice general dentistry.  He later moved to 114 East Main Street with his late friend, Dr. Pete Nickolas.

He was a member of the American Dental Association, the Maryland State Dental Association, and the Carroll County Dental Society.  He also served as president of the Carroll County Dental Society, the newly formed Symphony Society of Carroll County, and was an active member of H.O.P.E., Carroll County’s first affordable housing organization.  For several years he volunteered at the dental clinic sponsored by the St. Francis Neighborhood Center in Baltimore City.  He was particularly proud to have been one of the many thousands who joined Martin Luther King, Jr.’s 1963 March on Washington.

Dr. Meyers was a member of the St. John Catholic Church, where he served as chairman of the Liturgy Committee of the first parish council and was interim choir director for several years.

Dr. Meyers was a member of the United States Army from 1945 to 1947.  He was a graduate of LaSalle High School in Cumberland, Maryland, Potomac State College in Keyser, WV, and the University of Maryland’s Baltimore College of Dental Surgery, where he met his future wife, also a dentist.

He was an avid traveler and he and his wife especially enjoyed Eastern Turkey and the Central Asian Countries on the Marco Polo Silk Route.  Opera and theatre lover, he and his wife were subscribers to the Baltimore Opera Company for thirty eight years and also subscribers to Center Stage.  He read extensively from an eclectic selection of literature.  His interests in movies began as a young boy when he raptly watched Tom Mix movies in the Lonaconing San Toy Theatre.

In 1988, he and his wife bought a second home on Tilghman Island located on the water facing Harris Creek and the Chesapeake Bay.  This was a favorite gathering place for family and friends and it was a tradition for family to gather and ring in the New Year in their Chicken Point home.

Surviving are his wife Barbara E. Seifert whom he married April 27, 1957 at St. Ignatius Catholic Church in Baltimore, Maryland, daughter Ellen A. Meyers and wife Elena Yatzek of Chicago, Illinois, son Anthony A. Meyers and wife Carol Killebrew of Raleigh, North Carolina, daughter Marianne R. Meyers and husband Hans P. Dettmar of Annadale, Virginia, step-granddaughter Anna Cosima Sandell, lovingly known as Zosie, and many nieces and nephews and four great nephews.  He was predeceased by siblings George A., Mary E., John C., Joseph G.,  Catherine T., Vincent D. and Frances de Sales.  Also survived by special family and friends Kathy and Art Palaia and Andrea Bowden.
