Robert “Bob” Furney passed away peacefully at his home on March 3, 2026. He was born in Gettysburg on July 4, 1942 and went onto graduate from Gettysburg High School and Gettysburg College, where he played on the 1964 Middle Atlantic Conference football champions.
Mr. Furney moved to Maryland in 1965, working first at the Lehigh Cement Company and then a number of federal government agencies in Baltimore and the D.C. area. Mr. Furney was the head of position classification within the Human Resources offices at several locations, the most notable were the Bethesda Naval Hospital and the Government Printing Office. He retired from federal service in 2002 after 33 years.
Mr. Furney was an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens. He also enjoyed traveling with his late wife Dorothy and getting together with his high school friends for golf outings. A big childhood thrill was caddying for President Dwight Eisenhower at the Gettysburg Country Club. He also enjoyed taking friends and family on tours of the Gettysburg Battlefield.
Mr. Furney is survived by his children from a previous marriage, son Fred Furney (Angela), Fred's daughter Stella and their son Tikhon and daughter Monica Goldstone (Dr. Andrew Goldstone) and their children Alec and Nicolette. He is also survived by the three children of his second wife Dorothy who passed away in 2018. Denise Leasure and her three children Kylan, Cassia and Khelsa Connolly; David (Kim) Leasure and their son Gregory, and Doug (Sara) Leasure and their two children Nathaniel and Andrew.
A private service for family and friends is planned. A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the Brightview Senior Facility in Westminster, MD, where he resided the last two years of his life.
