Russell Raymond Van Splinter Obituary

Russell Raymond Van Splinter, age 84, passed away peacefully on March 29, 2024, in Taylorsville, MD.  Born on June 1, 1939 to Russell and Olga Van Splinter, Russell Raymond grew up in Clifton, NJ.

He spent much of his life in military service and law enforcement. After joining the United States Marines, he served as a military policeman during a tour in Vietnam and Japan and was honorably discharged as a corporal. When he was stateside, he served as a patrolman in Westfield, NJ. He married Helene Porzig in 1964 and the couple later moved to the Washington, DC area. Russell rose to the rank of captain in the Prince George’s County Police Department, receiving many commendations for his service, including Police Officer of the Year after breaking up a burglary and absorbing three bullets in the process. Later in his career, he worked as a special agent in drug interdiction for the Federal Aviation Administration. In addition, he attended American University while working, graduating with a master’s degree. Later in life, Russell and Helene moved to Carroll County, MD.

Russell was preceded in death by his parents and sister Patricia. His wife Helene passed away in 2009.

Russell is survived by his daughter, Darlene Van Splinter Bakke and her husband Donald of Arlington, VA, and son Russell Van Splinter, Jr. and his wife Tina of Hampstead, MD, as well as grandchildren Renna Bakke, Owen Van Splinter and Riley Van Splinter.
