Steven H Thomson Obituary

Steven H. Thomson, 81, of Fairfield, PA, passed away peacefully in his home on August 19, 2024 with his family by his side.  Steve was born in Hanover, PA on January 6, 1943.

He graduated from North Carroll High School in 1961 where he lettered in three sports. He played baseball in the summer with American Legion teams and various county organizations. Steve was selected to the Orioleland All-Stars for a game at Memorial Stadium in 1960 as well as the U.S. Hearst All-Stars that game was played in Yankee Stadium.

After high school Steve attended Bethany College in Lindsborg, KS and earned a bachelor’s degree in 1968.

In 1970, Steve began his coaching career at William Jewell College, in Liberty, MO. He served as the head baseball coach for 5 years, earning Coach of the Year honors in 1974 by the District 16 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics. While at William Jewell he also was an assistant coach for the football team.

In 1974 Steve earned a master’s degree from Central Missouri State in Warrensburg, MO.

A year later Steve and his family returned to Maryland where he taught physical education in Howard and Carroll Counties spending 25 years at Westminster High School. During his time at Westminster Steve coached football, basketball, baseball, and tennis. He then returned to the college ranks serving as an assistant baseball coach at McDaniel College and Mount St. Mary’s College. During his time at Westminster High School Steve also served as the athletic director from 1993-2001.

In addition to teaching and coaching, during the summer Steve managed the Westminster Riding Club in Westminster, MD from 1977-1995.

In 2016, Steve was inducted into the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame for his achievements throughout his career as a student-athlete, coach, and administrator.  Steve continued to stay active after retiring, playing golf and pickleball. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and grandchildren traveling to sporting events.

Steve is survived by his wife Janice Bitzer Thomson of 57 years formerly of Westminster, MD, his son Scott S. Thomson and fiancée Carrie V. Bollinger of Waynesboro, PA, daughter Staci R. Brennan and husband Martin P. Brennan of Orrtanna, PA, and his three grandchildren, Braden S. Thomson and wife Kristen Thomson of Salisbury, NC, Rebecca M. Thomson and her fiancé Nathan Little of Durham, NC and Allie E. Thomson, of Ashland, VA.  He is also survived by his sister Judith A. Martin and husband Fred Martin of San Antonia, TX, Bob Ensor of Manchester, MD, Jessie L. Bitzer, III of St. Augustine, FL and J. Kevin Bitzer and wife Lori Bitzer of Glen Rock, PA, along with many nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held for immediate family. The family will have a celebration of life at a later date.
