Susan Anderson Obituary

Susan Lee Anderson, a voracious reader who built her life around her passion for books, died October 1, 2021, at her home near Uniontown, MD, at the age of 67.  A sacrament of final rest will be spoken in Westminster at Ascension Episcopal Church on October 23, 2021, at 4:00PM.

Susan was born July 19, 1954, in Baltimore, to Donald Paul Anderson and Ruth Dolores Garlock Anderson. She spent her early childhood in Catonsville and Ellicott City. She attended Samuel Ready School for Girls in Hunting Ridge, Baltimore. She graduated from Mount Hebron High School in Ellicott City in 1971.

She graduated from Western Maryland College, now known as McDaniel College, in 1974, majoring in English and Spanish. She went on to earn a Master’s degree in education and American Sign Language from the college in 1976.

She taught high school English in Carroll County, then took a job in Fort Detrick, Frederick, MD. She continued her federal career at the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services in Woodlawn, MD. She retired at 55, ending her career there as Director, Division of Research and Information Dissemination. ORDI, CMS, HHS.

Susan was bright, witty, and a loyal friend. She loved her alma mater, where she made friends and enjoyed experiences that shaped her entire adult life. She had a passion for roller coasters, music, and dogs, and always had at least two canine companions.

But most of all, she loved the written word.  She read fiction avidly and was a news junkie. Her love for books took her to mystery writers conferences, where she was a great favorite among the readers and writers. Her favorite t-shirt depicted an earnest young girl pulling a wagon loaded with books from the library. In some ways, she lived that shirt, traveling weekly to the Carroll County Public Library, Westminster in her aging Land Rover to pick up a trove of books.  Everyone knew her name and loved her dearly, as she did them.
