William “Bill” Louis Callaghan, Jr., 93, of Westminster, died peacefully Monday, December 31, 2018 at Lookabout Manor. Born on August 4, 1925, in Baltimore, MD., he was the son of the late William Louis Callaghan, Sr. and Emily Brookey Callaghan. Preceded in death by his wife Diane Kent Callaghan who died September 30, 2007, they were married for 53 years.
Bill is a veteran of WWII and served in the Navy where he received the Naval Combat Ribbon for action on Iwo Jima while assigned to the USS LSM 206. In addition, Bill was in the Marine Reserves during the Korean War and was a member of the American Legions in Westminster, MD and Charlestown, WV.
He is survived by five children Sherron V. Broadway of Wilmington, DE., Mindy L. Callaghan and husband David F. Yonkoski of Westminster, MD., William Patrick Callaghan and wife Margaret of Frederick, MD., Diane E. Burdette and husband Charles of New Windsor, MD., and Joseph G. Callaghan, CDR, USCG and wife Molly of Westford, MA. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren and 16 great-grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on January 7, 2019 at 11:00 am at St. James Catholic Church, 49 Crosswinds Drive, Charlestown, WV 25414. Inurnment will follow at Culpeper National Cemetery.
