David John Alt, Sr, 80, died Apr. 03, 2013 at his Venice Florida home with his wife Lucille by his side—after a courageous year long battle with cancer.

He was born in Petersburg, WVA, to the late John and Pauline Crites Alt, and in 1941 moved to a farm in Westminster, MD.  David enlisted in the US Army at the age of 17—serving in Japan during the Korean War, received the Korean War Medal, United National Service Medal and Soldier of the Month Award.  Honorably discharged in 1953, he then started work with the Chesapeake & Potomac Telephone Co. (now part of Verizon) as Lineman-Cable Splicer and much later as a buried cable locator for the company’s Miss Utility program.  Besides working for the phone co. for 32 yrs., retiring at the age of 52, he also held a Master Electricians License, as well as a Contractor and Realtor license.  This allowed him to start his own successful home and apartment rental business in Maryland and in Florida, with the help of his wife and children.  Dave taught all 3 of his sons building and contracting skills in the process of building this business.  He was proud to have 2nd generation tenants to have rented from him.

Dave was a licensed Private Pilot, and his greatest joy, other than his family, was flying his 1976 Cessna Cardinal RG that he owned for over 20 years, often personally flying back and forth from MD to FL several times in a year.

David was a dedicated Master Mason, as well as memberships in the Shrine, Lions Club (in MD and Venice Lions), VASI (Venice Aviation Society, Inc.), the Venice Antique Car Club and a lifetime member of the VFW.  We’ll miss seeing Dave in his wheelchair in front of Publix on the Island, collecting for the Shriner’s crippled children hospitals and there, ringing the bell for the Salvation Army every year.  He was a great inspiration to all who knew him.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Lucille Nunn Alt, 5 children, daughters Susan Krichten (Westminster) and Sharon Stair (Venice, FL), sons David Jr. (Westminster), Ronald (Silver Spring, MD) and Donald (Westminster & Venice, FL), 8 grandchildren, Kristin Stair (MD), Heather Stair (FL), Sabrina Krichten Garnett (PA), Nicholas Krichten (SC), Jeffrey Krichten (PA), David Alt, III (MD), Mindy Alt (MD)  and Danny Alt (MD) and 1 great grandchild, Isabella Vail (FL), also siblings Anna Mae Beard (MD) and Keith Allan Alt (CA). He was predeceased by brother Lawrence Alt (MD)

At David’s request, cremation was handled by Farley’s Funeral Home of Venice, FL, and a memorial service was held at the Alt’s family church in Venice on April 18.

The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations in David’s honor be sent to:  Shriners Hospital of Tampa,  12502 USF Pine Drive, Tampa, FL 33612, and, The New Windsor Lions Club, P.O. Box 167, New Windsor, MD 21176
