George Thomas Conn

George Thomas Conn, 78, died at home in Finksburg, MD, on Monday, April 22, 2013. Born June 14, 1934, in Philadelphia, PA, he was the son of the late Lane Knight Conn Sr. and Thelma Lillian Horbury.

George was a talented baseball player in high school, and his hitting skills earned him a minor-league tryout. After graduating from Bristol (PA) High School in 1953, George served in the U.S. Army for four years as a medic.

George earned an associate degree from Baltimore City Community College, and counseled adolescents with emotional difficulties. He also managed the rock band Mannekin; George’s son Eric played lead guitar and sang in the group, which developed a considerable local following in the early 1980s.

George was an avid reader, and especially loved presidential biographies and other nonfiction works of history and politics. He enjoyed movies, theatrical performances and music of many genres. George loved to discuss politics and current affairs; he was passionate about civil liberties, human & animal rights, environmental protection and other progressive causes. He was also an avid fan of the Baltimore Orioles and Ravens.

He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rochelle Conn; sisters Connie Ekis and husband Ron and Sheryl Smith and husband David; brother John Christian and wife Kathy; son Eric Conn and wife Karen; daughter Cynthia Hernan and husband Doug; and grandchildren Olivia, Andrew and Julia Conn.

George is predeceased by his mother, father and older brother, Lane Knight Conn Jr.

A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 East Main Street, Westminster, MD 21157.  Friends may visit the family from 10:30 a.m. until time of services.  Interment will be private.
