Matthew Laird Smith, 56, of Hampstead, died peacefully at home on Tuesday, August 18, 2015. Born December 8, 1958 in Riverdale, he was the son of Solveig Lauritzen Smith of Westminster and the late Berlen Leon Smith. He was the husband of 31 years to Debbie Stem Smith.
He was self-employed as an independent contractor. He graduated from Westminster High School. He enjoyed Thursday night horseshoes with the boys and “Big Rock” Beach Volleyball. He especially enjoyed time with his family and children and charter fishing trips.
Besides his wife and mother, he is survived by son Kyle L. Smith and wife Brittni of Manchester, daughter Kacey L. Hudgins and husband Mike of Hanover, Pa., son Jordan Houck of Mt. Joy, Pa., 3 sisters Cheryl Smith and Kyra McGlew of Florida and Noelle Smith of VA, a brother Justin Smith of Florida, 3 grandchildren Kailey and Ava Toledo and Colton Leo Smith, mother-in-law Betty Stem of Westminster, brother-in-law and sister-in-law Richard and Debbie Stem of Hampstead, 2 nephews Dustin Dell and wife Nicki and Darren Dell, a niece Darcie Cipollini and husband Joe, 2 great nieces Alexa Dell and Lydia Cipollini, a great-nephew Eli Dell. Also survived by aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was predeceased by his father-in-law Charles Stem.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, August 23, 2015 from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Fletcher Funeral & Cremation Services, 254 E. Main St., Westminster. A memorial service will begin at 3 p.m. with Pastor Chris Carabell officiating. Interment will be private.
