Selma Leonard

January 30, 1916 ~ August 12, 2014 (age 98) 98 Years Old


Selma B. Leonard, 98, of Westminster, formerly of Wilmington, DE, passed away Tuesday, August 12, 2014 after a brief illness at the Hospice section of Carroll Lutheran Village Health Care Center. Selma was survived by her loving daughter and son-in-law Joan and Ron Tait and a large extended family and numerous friends.  She was the daughter of the late Nettie Groom Clark and Groom Clark.

     As to family who were most important to her, were her nephews Neal Oliver of New Jersey, Leroy Simpkins of North Carolina and her nephews and niece to whom she was a great-aunt and great-great aunt. Also, two young men from Ghana, NANA and Anderson Mensah, who were proud to call her “Grandmom.”

     Selma worked most of her adult life, mainly at the DuPont Experimental Station in Wilmington, DE and at about age 60 years, retired and moved to Westminster, living the past 20 years plus with her daughter and son-in-law. At 98 years of age, Selma was an alert, fully cognitive person who above all else was a caring, loving and generous human being.

     Selma had a plethora of interests and a large number of friends; she loved to knit ski sweaters and baby blankets, for years she had a table at the Christmas craft show in Pleasant Valley. She also, loved to play bingo, gambling at Charlestown Casino, and any game of chance. Reading and writing letters to all new and old friends and keeping in touch were very special to her.

     Selma (a.k.a. Elmo) was a caring, energetic, fun, loving, fine person who enhanced the lives of all those she met.

     In lieu of flowers, donations to a charity of your choice or to McDaniel College, The Ronald and Joan Tait Teaching Scholarship, 2 College Hill, Westminster, MD 21157.

     A private burial will be held on Friday at Westminster Cemetery.
