William “Bill” Davis, of Westminster formerly of Owings Mills, passed away July 11, 2013 at the age of 92.  He was born July 3, 1921 in Cumberland, MD to the late Harvey and Theoda (Collins) Davis.  Bill was the beloved husband of the late Margaret “Marge” Davis who passed away August 22, 2009.

Bill was a decorated veteran from World War II serving in the U.S. Army as a Paratrooper in Company C, 509th Parachute Infantry Battalion.  His decorations include a Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart with 2 Oak Leaf Clusters, Presidential Unit Citation with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, and the French Legion of Honor awarded for his service to the French people during Operation Dragoon.  Whitey, as he was known in the service, completed five combat jumps in North Africa, Italy and France.  

Bill worked for C and P Telephone Company, now Verizon, after leaving the service at the conclusion of WWII until his retirement in 1981.  During his life, he was an active member of the Windsor Lions Club, Telephone Pioneers of America, Piney Branch Golf Club and the 509th Parachute Infantry Association.  Bill moved to Carroll Lutheran Village in December 2003 where he helped found the Men’s Club as well as working on the Golf Committee.  He was an active golfer, poker & domino player, and avid joke teller.

Bill is survived by his two daughters and sons-in-law, Carol (Davis) and Dominic D’Amico and Linda (Davis) and Carl Cherney.  He also is survived by his five grandchildren and their spouses: Brett and Danae Corbett, Christina D’Amico, Elizabeth Cherney, Laura (Cherney) and Andrew Sampson, and Andrew and Meagan Cherney and six great-grandchildren: Alexis, Tyler, Carson & Olivia Corbett, and Joel & Luke Sampson.

A memorial service will be held on July 24, 2013 at 11:00am at Carroll Lutheran Village Krug Chapel, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD, 21158 with the family receiving friends at 10:00am and a reception immediately following the service.  Interment with military honors will take place at 2:30pm at Garrison Forest Veterans Cemetery.

The family requests that memorial contributions be made in lieu of flowers to the Carroll Lutheran Village Ministry of Caring Fund, 300 St. Luke Circle, Westminster, MD 21158.
